We understand that many patients are nervous about receiving dental treatment. As part of our practice’s empathic, caring ethos, we provide VIP care for nervous patients, helping you to overcome your fears and achieve the healthy, happy smile you deserve.
There are many triggers for fear of the dentist. Some patients don’t like needles or the sounds of drills and other dental equipment. Others may have had a bad experience in the past, or may fear being out of control as dental work is an intimate procedure. If you haven’t visited a dental practice for many years, you may feel embarrassed about the state of your teeth and fearful that you will be judged. We promise that we will never be judgemental. Our aim is to get you back to dental health and to help you stay healthy for life.
We have a range of options available to help nervous patients get treatment. Our primary focus is on relaxation and reassurance; we are a friendly practice and our team is happy to talk to you about any concerns you may have, at any time.
Your nurse is on your side and will stay with you during treatment to offer reassurance. Should you need a breather, just raise your hand at any time and we’ll take a break. Before any injection we apply a topical numbing gel that tastes of bubblegum, so you won’t feel a thing. If you hate the sound of the drill, we can provide you with headphones to listen to your favourite music.
Nine out of ten times, relaxation and reassurance helps nervous patients overcome their fears. However, we do also offer acupuncture, which dentist Julie Yeung is fully qualified to deliver and which helps many patients to relax.
We also offer a course of hypnotherapy in the run-up to treatment. Tina Reibl, our qualified hypnotherapist, visits the practice and can work with anxious patients over a few sessions to help break negative associations, for example with needles, and replace them with positive ones.
For more severe or complex cases, we offer treatment under IV sedation. You will be awake and able to cooperate with your dentist, but will remember little about treatment. Our fully-trained staff will monitor you at all times during sedation, and you will need someone to come with you to drive you home after treatment.
